Why Coaching?

I suppose this question is easily formulated due to the uncertainty of this new age learning method. After listening to “The Coach” – Johan Brits – at a successful network breakfast seminar arranged by TSM Consulting, this uncertain term made much more sense!

The most important step during Coaching is to choose the right Coach that will “fit” with company and the individual. There are numerous “chancers” that don’t have the credentials and unfortunately damage the image of coaching. A successful Coach must have life and work experience as well as the qualifications to be able to make a substantial difference in an individual’s life.

The golden threat of success is mutual trust, integrity and- most importantly- confidentiality. Without these the coaching relationship will fail.  A Coach needs to be able to encourage an individual to believe in themselves and to realise that they can do what they set out to do – “Awareness leads to positive behaviour”.

The secret of a Coach is not by telling or instructing an individual but by leading and asking important questions, for example: “What do you want to achieve?”, “How are you going to achieve it?”.

Coaches deal with a variety of situations. They can be required to work on a one-on-one basis with a newly appointed CEO or senior manager to help develop the skills required to lead people or to help an inexperience entrepreneur to compile a business plan. They can also be involved in coaching a team that is not performing or with the executive team in an organisation that is not performing.

Individuals decide to work with coaches because they want to make certain improvements in their personal lives and/or in their professional lives. If a company is trying to address a sensitive area of an employee’s performance, for example, interpersonal skills, coaching is often perceived to be a safer, supportive and more confidential alternative than traditional training. Individuals are more open to admit development areas or relationship problems in a coaching environment than in front of their peers.

Coaching sessions can be conducted over the telephone or by using telephone conferencing facilities, although face to face coaching tends to be more popular and successful.

To conclude, a coach is there to work together with an individual to enable them to become more successful in all aspects of their life and to realise their full potential.
