Funeral and Embalming Services for Africa
FESA’s vision is to be the preferred training provider of value-added services from consulting to education to the Funeral Industry not only in South Africa, but to the whole continent of Africa as well.
The launch of the Funeral and Embalming Services for Africa (FESA) Training establishment is an exciting development for the South African Funeral Industry. Building and developing upon the groundwork initiated by the Funeral Academy for Africa (FAfA), FESA will be able to provide a more encompassing range of value added services and organizational development initiatives to the Industry as a whole.
OUR OBJECTIVES
Our objectives are to assist the Funeral Industry by improving business through:
- Training and facilitation of Skills Development Programmes
- Management consulting interventions with regards to process and organizational development initiatives within the Funeral Industry
- Procurement services for the industry, providing high quality products at affordable prices on request.
- Assessment for selection and development purposes.
- Coaching and mentoring for the personnel of existing funeral companies to sustainably improve business performance.
Funeral businesses will be able to operate at their full potential, ensuring that staff may become suitably qualified and professional care-givers are provided with a clear career path.
FESA will facilitate training of the NQF Level Three Certificate in Funeral Services. This will be available on a part-time basis. Theoretical training is interspersed with practical sessions in a funeral home environment. Students will have 36 months to complete the 14 modules.

For the qualification to be awarded, the Summative Assessment must be completed and will be at an additional cost
An introduction to Embalming Practice is covered in the NQF Level Three curriculum; however a full qualification meeting B.I.E requirements is envisaged. The Art of Reconstruction is also dealt with in this curriculum.
For those students who already have a minimum of five year’s working experience within a funeral home environment, the NQF Three Certificate in Funeral Service qualification may be obtained via the Recognition of Prior Learning route. (RPL)
Because FESA is entirely independent; it is able to provide confidential advice and assistance to existing companies without compromising its ethical values.
- “How do I enrol to study through FESA?” An Application Form is available on the FESA Website. Complete it and send directly to FESA administration. You will be contacted and the process will commence.
- “How long will the full qualification take to complete?” As a part-time student you have 36 months to complete the curriculum.
- “Are there bursaries or financial assistance available?” The Services SETA provide Learnerships and Bursaries which may be applied for and utilised towards the cost of training. However, these options will not cover the total cost.
- “Where will training be provided?” Training is conducted in venues where the majority of the students reside; every effort is made to minimise expenditure. Where possible, mortuary training will be conducted at funeral homes equipped to provide this.
- “Once I have obtained the Certificate in Funeral Services NQF 3, will I be able to start my own business?” You will be fully-equipped to run your own funeral home; the scope and opportunities will be determined by your vision to succeed.
- “How will FESA be able to assist me improve my already-established business?” FESA will assist you in procuring products at the best prices available.
R1000 + VAT (R1150) per day per subject for the NQF 3. The fee includes workbooks and, refreshments. The fees exclude any travelling and accommodation costs for the learner. If in-house training is done, all costs with regards to accommodation, travel (km at a cost of R3.95 per km) will be for the account of the company who request the training.
FESA will do staff performance evaluations and advise on remediation where necessary. FESA will advise on skills development training to improve productivity within the workplace tailored to specific needs and available facilities.
